Lacrosse Muscles Its Way West: A Sport Incubated by Eastern Prep Schools Quietly Picks Up Converts; Big Gains in California

Lacrosse Muscles Its Way West: A Sport Incubated by Eastern Prep Schools Quietly Picks Up Converts; Big Gains in CaliforniaWSJ.com - This weekend in Foxboro, Mass., more than 100,000 spectators are expected to pour into Gillette Stadium to see four schools -- Duke, Virginia, Cornell and Syracuse -- square off for the national championship of a sport that, if the numbers are correct, you'll be hearing a lot more about. That sport is lacrosse.

Until recently, lacrosse -- America's other stick and ball sport -- was rarely on TV and only its championship games generated much in the way of media coverage. It was mostly played on the East Coast, and it was often viewed as a game for private-school kids. Some of the game's most electrifying athletes -- Gary and Paul Gait; Casey, Ryan and Michael Powell -- were little known outside core followers. The sole exception may be Jim Brown, the former Cleveland Browns running back who played lacrosse at Syracuse University. View rest of article

Lacrosse Participation Grew 9.1% in 2008

BALTIMORE – Lacrosse participation increased 9.1 percent in 2008, according to research by US Lacrosse for its annual participation report. There were 524,230 lacrosse players that were members of organized teams across the country in 2008, from the youth level all the way on up through the professional ranks.

Youth participation saw the largest percentage of increase in participation over the past year, at 9.8 percent with 265,214 total players in 2008. High school participation was close behind with a 8.3 percent increase and 218,823 players in 2008. Post-collegiate play also increased at a sizable rate of 9.3 percent.

"We are very proud that participation in the sport has been increasing at such a substantial rate," said Steve Stenersen, President and CEO of US Lacrosse. "Over the past decade, US Lacrosse has invested millions of dollars in human and programmatic resources to support the sport’s continued national expansion, and we’re pleased to see these positive results."

The US Lacrosse Participation Survey is produced annually by US Lacrosse. The survey is used to monitor participation at different levels of the sport across the country. The primary source of data for this report are surveys completed by the 60 US Lacrosse regional chapters that were active in 2008. Data is also used from the US Lacrosse database, National Collegiate Athletic Association, National Federation of State High School Associations, Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association and www.laxpower.com. The survey counts only participation on organized teams and does not include leisure time play of lacrosse.
