NOR CAL PLAYERS FAIR WELL AT NATIONAL TEAM TRYOUTS – TAGLIAFERI SELECTED TO U19 ROSTER

Three Northern California high school lacrosse players who were invited to compete for roster spots on the United States U-19 National Lacrosse Team returned home today having done a fantastic job of representing the best of Northern California lacrosse at the tryouts.  Even more exciting was the fact that Michael Tagliaferi (San Ramon Valley – North Carolina) became the first Northern California player every selected to represent the United States on the U19 National Team.

Patrick Worstell (San Ramon Valley – Syracuse), Matt Emery (St. Ignatius – undeclared) and Tagliaferi all tried out for one of 23 roster spots during a 4 day tryout this past weekend at UMBC in Baltimore along with 120 of the best players in the nation.  According to Carlos Trujillo (Archbishop Mitty) who was one of 20 members of the U-19 Selection Committee “All three players earned a great deal of respect from the members of the selection committee and each of them had highlight moments throughout the tryout.  As a selector, I couldn’t favor any players, but as a Nor Cal HS coach, I couldn’t help but be proud of the way these three players more than held their own with the best players the East Coast had to offer.  Congratulations to Patrick, Michael and Matt for a job well done!”

From Nothing to quite something! Oakland tech's Amazing season

The Oakland Tech JV lacrosse team won the NCJLA championship on Sunday, May 22. The program, only in its second season and started off by an equipment grant from US Lacrosse, is now the top JV club team in all of Northern California.  Oakland Tech is public high school in a struggling urban school district. Heach JV Coach Beau Shore had serious challenges the first season; the new team lost every game except the for the last one. Plus a majority of the players had never even played lacrosse before. However hard work, excellent coaching from assistants Jason Moore, Quincey Smith, Amitai Cohen, and Dede Szykier, financial support from the local lacrosse community and the US Lacrosse equipment grant all paid off this year with an amazing winning season and ultimate championship.

Firehawks Youth Lacrosse Club Raises Nearly $15,000 for Programs for Underserved Children

PRESS RELEASE

Name:  Face-Off 5K Charity Fun Run
Date:  May 6, 2011
Place:  Redwood City, CA
Contact:  Doug Appleton, Firehawks Lacrosse, dappleton@eastonbellsports.com

"Firehawks give back!" is part of the core foundation and belief system of the Firehawks, a youth lacrosse club serving boys and girls ages 6-15 from the Peninsula of the San Francisco Bay Area. The Firehawks pride themselves on being different from other clubs by giving back to the community and helping out those who honor the game of lacrosse.

The club follows the Native American proverb,  “Tell me and I'll forget. Show me and I may not remember. Involve me and I'll understand.”

All Firehawks are required to participate in an annual club-wide community service project. On May 6, 2011, for the 3rd year in a row, the Firehawks held a charity fun run to raise money for two outstanding programs serving disadvantaged youth: Native Vision (www.nativevision.org) and Lacrosse for LIFE (www.lacrosseforlife.org).

Native Vision is a partnership between Johns Hopkins Center for American Indian Health and the National Football League Players Association.  Firehawk funds will be used to help nearly 1,000 Native American youth from across the country attend a summer sports and life skills camp. The camp is lead by professional and collegiate athletes who donate their time to work with participating youth.

Lacrosse for LIFE (Leadership, Integrity, Friendship, Education) uses the sport and tradition of lacrosse to inspire and educate youth in under served and at-risk communities in San Francisco.  Firehawk funds will be used to purchase lacrosse equipment for youth players in urban San Francisco.

This year's Face-Off 5k was sponsored by Easton Lacrosse.  SlingIt Lacrosse and Goetz Bros Sporting Goods donated raffle prizes.

Past Firehawk community service projects include an environmental clean up and providing gifts to homeless families during the holidays. Firehawks have also sent care packages and letters to the Pachyderm Unit in Afghanistan through America Supporting Americans (ASA).

NORCAL TEAM SELECTED FOR US LACROSSE GIRLS’ U-15 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Berkeley, CA - The team to represent the NorCal Chapter at the US Lacrosse Girls' U-15 National Championship was selected following sessions on February 30th at Witter Field in Berkeley and March 5th at Treasure Island.  The 2011 U-15 National Championship tournament will be played at ESPN Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista, FL, July 20-22.

The NorCal Girls U15 National Team will be coached by Theresa Sherry, Head Coach of the University of California's Women's Lacrosse team and assisted by Danielle Spencer, Women's USA National Team player. Eligible players could be freshmen in High School but may not turn 16 on or before December 31, 2011. The NorCal team is comprised of players from Northern California Junior Lacrosse Association (NCJLA) and California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) schools.

“We had an amazing number of talented players tryout from all over the Bay Area, making our selection decisions very difficult,” commented Sherry. “The group we put together has a good mix of speed, athleticism, and tenacity, and we look forward to working with them this summer to represent Northern California!”

Sherry gave an overview of the players which were selected: “Allie Dacar from Pleasanton will anchor us in goal, with Olivia Deutschman (Pleasanton), Meghan Harrington(Danville), and Alex Robertson(Belvedere) defending in front of her.  We expect Sarah Monday from San Ramon, Maddie Aston from Pleasanton, and Kyra Pelton from Redwood City to contribute on defense and on the circle as well.

Our midfielders will be led by Caroline Cummings, Cassie Angeles, Lynnea Flaherty, and Gabbi Klein.  They will be joined by Brigid White, Louisa Biffar, and Jackie Gilbert as well, and we expect to get a lot of our offensive power from this talented group.”

Sherry continued, “Jordan Allen, Ashley Hill, and Kaitlin Frangione will lead our attack with a dangerous trio of abilities-1v1 drives, pinpoint feeding, and savvy cutting. Danville's Mari Waidelich, Ella Dzenitis, and Corinne Lafayette will also contribute on the attack and in the midfield.  Jill Weidner from Novato will be a great target for us inside and she may contribute in the midfield as well. “

Sherry’s finished commenting on her squad: “With the depth of talent on this squad, we expect to wear down teams using midfield lines, an aggressive offense, and high pressure defense.  We will work hard to make our region proud, and show the nation that we have some of the best lacrosse in the country in Northern California!.”

Jan 30 - NORCAL HALL OF FAMER BRIAN LANTIER TO BE INDUCTED INTO LONG ISLAND LACROSSE HALL OF FAME

Brian LantierBrian Lantier, NorCal Lacrosse Hall of Famer, will be inducted into the Class of 2010 of the Long Island Lacrosse Hall of Fame on February, 5, 2011 at the Huntington Hilton Hotel, Melville, NY.

Brian Lantier was born in Manhattan and graduated from Huntington High School (“HHS”) in  1960. Don Loughlin, Adelphi University Athletic Hall of Fame player and truly unsung hero in the growth of L.I. lacrosse, introduced HHS, Suffolk County, and Lantier to lacrosse. A prolific scorer, Mr. Lantier was the only Suffolk player on the 1960 ten-man Long Island Lacrosse All-Star Team. As a Huntington senior he was named to the first team All Scholastic Lacrosse Squad by the Metropolitan and Long Island Lacrosse Association.

Lantier played five years of college lacrosse (he played his first year at the University of Maryland) and broke Navy's 11-year old plebe scoring record as a freshman. In three seasons on the Navy varsity, the teams Mr. Lantier played on suffered only one loss and won three national college championships and one national open title.

Under the tutelage of legendary Willis “Bildy” Bilderback, Lantier received his first All-American honors at attack in ’63 and his second at midfield in ’64. In ’65 he was team captain and selected to First Team All American  as a midfielder. When Bildy retired after nine national championships in twelve years, he named his ’65 team, singling out the midfield line,  as his best in his coaching career. Lantier scored his last two college goals andLantier at Navy assists in the North-South Classic.
Graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, he was awarded the Stuart Oxnard Miller Memorial Lacrosse Cup and installed in the U.S. Naval Academy Athletic Hall of Fame with three USILA National Championships and an NCAA soccer medal.

After graduating from the Naval Academy, Mr. Lantier spent five years as a naval officer on sea duty, including  action in the Vietnam War. After leaving the U.S. Navy, Mr. Lantier played for the Philadelphia Lacrosse Club as he embarked on an international banking career, working for some of the world's biggest financial companies. He has served on the U.S. Lacrosse Foundation's board of directors and was finance chairman of the U.S. Naval Academy alumni committee that built the $3 million Bilderback-Moore Navy Lacrosse Hall of Fame.

Lantier played three Grandmaster Vail Shootouts for the Navy Old Goats Club and was an assistant coach at St. Ignatius High School in San Francisco. He was inducted into the Northern California U.S. Lacrosse Foundation Hall of Fame in 2007. He is a past Board Member of the U.S. Lacrosse Foundation and continues to serve on the Nor Cal USL Chapter Board. Lantier was a shareholder and Board Member of the Major League Lacrosse’s now defunct San Francisco Dragons.

Lantier’s two sons played lacrosse for Mercersburg Academy (PA), Annapolis, Washington College, and Dallas Lacrosse Club; both currently coach youth lacrosse in the Dallas and San Francisco  areas. His two grandsons are field and box lacrosse youth players. Retired since 1998, Lantier lives with his wife Carla, his HHS sweetheart and a University of Maryland graduate, in Tiburon, CA on the San Francisco Bay.
